The number of adults homeless in Waterford this year remains higher than average despite a slight decrease in October.

This was a small reduction on the September figure of 121 and was the same number as the month before.

ANALYSIS 

One-hundred and nineteen was the most frequently reported figure for 2025 so far, suggesting a returning point rather than progress.

One hundred and nineteen adults were reported as homeless in January, August and now October.

And the average number of adults in emergency accommodation per month in 2025 is 118, making October’s figure just slightly higher than average.

The Waterford News and Star took the average number of homeless adults per month from each year from 2016, when the record began, to this year.

We found that the average number of adults experiencing homelessness in Waterford rose sharply in the last three years.

In 2023, the average number of adults in emergency accommodation each month from January to October was 76.

That increased to 98 in 2024 and 118 in 2025.

SOUTH EAST 

A total of 352 adults were in local authority emergency accommodation from October 20 to 26 in the South East region.

Of those, 212 were male, while 140 were female.

Waterford again topped the table in the region, followed by Tipperary with 88 adults in emergency accommodation.

Wexford came in at 51, followed by Kilkenny with 48 and Carlow with 46.

Seventy-two families were recorded, including 96 adults and 124 children.
