Number of same-sex marriages increase

A CSO report has revealed the number of marriages that took place in Waterford last year.
The report revealed 160 opposite sex marriages were registered in the City in 2023, which was 31 marriages less than a year prior, in 2022.
Of the same-sex marriages in the city last year 35 were catholic ceremonies, 11 were the Spiritualist Union of Ireland, and 31 were other religious denominations. There were also 72 civil marriages and 11 Humanist Association marriages. Meanwhile, 347 marriages were registered in Waterford county, 32 less than in 2022, comprised of: 136 catholic, three church of Ireland, 12 the Spiritualist Union of Ireland and 77 other religious denominations. There were 87 civil marriages and 32 Humanist Association marriages.
Waterford City had nine same sex marriages last year, four more than in 2022, while the county had seven same sex marriages, one more than in 2022. Nationally in 2023, there were 646 total same-sex marriages, 324 male and 322 female and 21,159 marriages overall in 2023 compared with 23,173 in 2022, a decrease of 2,014 (8.7%) and 3.1 per cent of marriages were same-sex.
