The skies over Waterford were illuminated in spectacular fashion tonight [Monday] as a result of a powerful solar storm hitting the earth.

The fantastic display began at around 9pm and increased in magnitude as the night progressed.
There were vivid sightings of what's popularly referred to as the Northern Lights across Waterford but also in other areas of the country including Wexford, Galway, Mayo, Dublin and Wicklow.

There was a space-weather alert issued earlier this week relating to a large solar flare and CME (coronal mass ejection) from the sun, which caused charged particles to reach the earth tonight.

It resulted in the Northern Lights becoming much more visible than usual and people across the county and elsewhere in the country took advantage of the situation to capture images of the event.

Waterford News & Star photographer, Joe Evans, captured the images here as the spectacular display moved across the Déise sky.

The red and green spectacle is being shared widely on social media.
