The opening of the next section of the South East Greenway between Waterford and New Ross is due to happen in the second quarter of this year, according to a report presented to the members of Piltown Municipal District at their monthly meeting in Ferrybank Library

In the report, presented by Acting District Director, Ian Gardner, the members were informed the members that Glas Civil Engineering Ltd. commenced works in November 2023 on Lot 5A of the greenway.

That section is a 5.5km stretch going from Ferrybank to Curraghmore.

Mr Gardner said that "substantial completion" was issued to the contractor as of December 20, 2024.

Mr Gardner said the final surface layer and the drainage edge stone is now complete.

He also commented that works continue with regard to minor fencing along the greenway.

"Works are also nearing completion at all level and segregated agricultural crossings," said Mr Gardner.

"Works associated with the provision of public lighting has been completed and connection applications submitted to the ESB," he added.

Mr Gardner went on to comment: "The installation of amenity fixtures including picnic benches, benches and bicycle stands is complete [and] landscaping works are now nearing completion."

He said that chicane gates have been installed at Level Crossings one and two, in addition to anti-skid surfacing and line marking at Level Crossing one.

Mr Gardner also said Creative Ireland funding was received for a wall mural along concrete screen fencing in Ferrybank and that the opening of this phase of the greenway is scheduled for "Q2, 2025".

The members were told that the project's Landowner Liaison Officer is continuing to engage with landowners adjoining the greenway in relation to boundary treatment and crossing points.

"The parameters for these discussions are set out within the Charter for South East Greenway Accommodation Works," said Mr Gardner.

"Fehily Timoney and Company Ltd., the multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy team engaged in May last year, continue to advance the detail design on the remaining sections of the greenway," he added.

Structural surveys on the Carrickcloney and Red Bridge have also been completed in relation to the project.

"Of the 24km of the greenway, around 14kms are now completed or substantially completed," said Mr Gardner.
