A new scheme to help community groups maintain local graveyards is on the way.

Senior Executive Officer in the Environment Department Dawn Wallace, said at the March sitting of the Dungarvan-Lismore District Council, that the local authority are just putting the paperwork together.

She said the scheme will involve a small grant groups can apply for.

Ms Wallace was responding to Cllr John Pratt, who raised concerns about the Lismore graveyard.

“It’s actually horrendous. I know it’s difficult because it’s not being maintained, but can we find a way to keep it maintained, because it is appalling a people are really upset by it.

“I had a woman come to me. Her husband is buried in there, and she was really upset at how it is now, so I think we have to find a way," said Cllr Pratt.
