The South East Greenway is scheduled to open in 2025.

Over half of the works along the the 24km South East Greenway have been either completed or substantially completed. 

At the Piltown Municipal District meeting, Councillors were informed of the latest updates along the Greenway. 

Works began on Lot 5A, the 5.5km section from Ferrybank to Curraghmore, in November 2023, carried out by Glas Civil Engineering Ltd.

Acting Director of Services at Kilkenny Council, Ian Gardner said works associated with the provision of public lighting had been completed and connection applications submitted to the ESB.

He said: "Since the last meeting in February, minor fencing works along the greenway have continued. Works are near complete at all level and segregated agricultural crossings. The installation of amenity fixtures including picnic benches, benches and bicycle stands has been completed, landscaping works are now nearing completion."

Mr Gardner added: "Accommodation works required to improve the sight-lines at Level Crossing 1, Rathpatrick, are well progressed."

According to the report: 'The Stage 3 Road Safety Audit was completed in January. The recommendations arising from the report were assessed and actioned. Other minor finishing out works will be completed to facilitate the opening of this section of the greenway towards the end of Q.1 2025'. 

North Quays

Cathaoirleach, Cllr Ger Frisby said: "There's great work being done there, it's fabulous the section from Ferrybank out to the Rhu Glenn."

As for the opening date, Cllr Frisby noted works along the North Quays: "I know that the ramp at the North Quays is probably holding that up. Hopefully when that gets sorted we should be looking at another month or two."
