A man who stole €5,000 from a pensioner as part of a phishing scam has paid compensation to the victim, meaning he will avoid prison.

The incident involved a woman in her 60s, who had a total of €73,000 stolen from her. €5,000 of these funds were transferred into the account of Reece Halligan (22), of 59 Grange Cohan, St John's Park.

In September 2025, Halligan was given the opportunity to raise €5,000 in compensation for the victim to avoid a custodial sentence. Last week, Halligan handed the full amount over to gardaí at Waterford Courthouse

Resultingly, an eight-month prison sentence, fully suspended, has been imposed.
