Man refused bail after alleged car hijacking with baby in back seat

Bail was refused during a hearing at Waterford District Court.

A Waterford man has been refused bail for allegedly hijacking a car with a baby in the back seat.

The man is alleged to have taken the vehicle while the driver, and mother of the child, was behind the wheel.

After pushing the woman from the car, he is understood to have removed the baby from the backseat before taking off with the vehicle. The car was found abandoned shortly afterwards.

The man's application for bail was refused by Judge Catriona Murray at Waterford District Court. The driver of the car came to court to speak about her fear of the man being out on bail. She told the court: "I don't know this person."

When asked what would happen if he was on bail, she said: "I wouldn't be able to stay at home. I'm just scared, I'm looking over my shoulder."

Gardaí said that the man had a "total disregard for public safety" and was at risk of breaching bail conditions. The accused yelled from the dock: "I promise ye I won't commit any more offences."

The man was remanded into custody until his next appearance in court on October 27.

The hearing was held in camera with reporting restrictions applied.
