Gardaí in Waterford are investigating all circumstances following a fatal assault in Dungarvan on Monday.

Gardai and emergency services responded to an incident at a residence in Cappagh Dungarvan, shortly before 6pm on April 13.

A male (70s) was discovered with serious injuries and was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene.

The remains of the deceased have been removed from the scene to the Mortuary in University Hospital Waterford, where a post-mortem is due to take place.

A male (40s ) was arrested at the scene and is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda station in the Eastern Region.

The scene and domestic residence have been preserved for forensic examination.

The Coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist have been notified. 

An incident room has been established at Dungarvan Garda Station and a Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) has been appointed to lead the investigation.

Gardaí say investigations are ongoing.
