A man has pleaded guilty to charges in relation to an incident where two gardaí were injured in Waterford.

Ryan Burton Wood (41), with addresses at 16 Park Crescent, Millisle, Co. Down, and 57 Cluain Mhor, Tramore, Co. Waterford, was before Judge Kevin Staunton at Waterford District Court, charged with section 6 public order and section 4 public order.

Sergeant Michael Hickey told the court that on April 1, 2025, two gardaí responded to an incident in Tramore.

As they exited the patrol car, they were met by the defendant on the street.

He became aggressive with gardaí, saying, “Don’t threaten me. You won’t take me without a fight.”

The defendant resisted gardaí who deployed their pepper spray.

The defendant proceeded to spear tackle one garda, knocking him to the ground.

He grabbed the other garda and broke his arm.

The court was told that the guard had to use his baton to free himself from the defendant.

Both guards were off duty for some time following the incident.

The court was told that the DPP directed summary disposal on a guilty plea only.

Judge Staunton accepted jurisdiction, and the solicitor for the defendant indicated he wished to plead guilty.

Judge Staunton noted that the defendant was not charged with assault.

He put the matter back for the preparation of the victim impact statements and sentence.
