The June Bank Holiday is usually a busy one for most, and especially those who have been trekking non-stop on the canvassing trail campaigning for the Local Elections.

However, one of the 79 local candidates found himself in a very different situation, taking time away from all the chaos to focus on a new, and very cute, addition to his team.

Sinn Féin's Conor McGuinness and wife Pia welcomed their baby boy, Liam Kilian McGuinness to the world on Sunday morning, June 2.

"Buachaill an-mhór agus láidir, guímid sonas agus sláinte air go deo," said the Sinn Féin representative as Gaeilge, who added that both Liam's sisters were "delighted and looking forward to meeting their baby brother."

Cllr McGuinness shared the news on social media at 5am that morning that he'd be "taking a little bit of a break from canvassing" but that he has "a good excuse" with a picture of the Maternity Admissions attached.

Hundreds of people offered their congratulations and well wishes to the couple.

One of those was Sinn Féin candidate Caroline Griffin, who has every faith in her Sinn Féin colleague: "Here in time to see Daddy re-elected."

When Cllr McGuinness did have a spare minute to return to the trail, he was gifted with a beautifully knitted tri-colour cardigan with matching buttons by Mrs Mary Whelan who was awaiting his call to her door.

The Sinn Féin Councillor was re-elected to the Dungarvan area on the first count, but the results were in late on Saturday night - well past Liam's bedtime.
