'Maybe next time' - Mary Roche reacts to general election elimination

Mary Roche has been eliminated.

Cllr Mary Roche of the Social Democrats has been eliminated in the eleventh count in Waterford.

Reacting to the result, Cllr Roche said:

“I’m not mystic meg, I had no clue how it was going to go, but if you had said to me yesterday morning I’d end up with just under 5,000 votes I’d be happy with that. Would I have liked to have been higher up? Absolutely. But for a small party with a three week campaign it’s a big ask.

Speaking on the future, she added: “I think there is definitely more there to be gotten, so we’ll live to fight another day and we have built a really solid base.

“I will hang in there, to try and encourage women to get into politics and to try help the Social Democrats and if we don’t believe we can change the world, then what's the point in it?

"Maybe next time.”

“I'd love to thank the people who came out and voted for us, and the people who listened to us on their doorsteps.

"I really want to thank my team; my campaign manager Tadhg Williams, who has been coming up and down from Dublin, Carein my youngest daughter who has canvassed with me from the very beginning and my others kids who have postered and leafletted, my husband and all the lads in the campaign team in the party who have come out and canvassed.”

Just one seat remains, which will be filled by either Matt Shanahan or Conor McGuinness.
