Fine Gael have a TD back in Dublin, with John Cummins elected on the ninth count.
Local party councillors Seanie Power and Liam Brazil have provided reaction to the victory.
Cllr Power commented: "I'm delighted for John and I think he really wants to work. I’ve great time for him and I think he’ll make an excellent minister. I’ve been out canvassing on the door and any question he was asked he could answer to perfection.
“He’s done incredible work and I also have to give huge credit to the girls in his office, they’re after doing a massive amount of work for me and people in my locality and I think that has been fed back into the electorate that came out and voted.
Cllr Liam Brazil added: “I’m so proud of Fine Gael today, winning that seat back, but for John Cummins to win it, I think its extraordinary.
“I think John can be at least a Junior Minister, if not more, because he has the ability and he’s young and ambitious, and that’s what we need in this county, because the time for the older lads is gone.
“I do believe John will push the 24/7 and push the airport. It's a great day for Waterford seeing John Cummins elected as a TD.”
