Older People's Council

Waterford Older People’s Council will hold its Annual General Meeting in the Mary Strangman (Large Room) at City Hall, Waterford, on Wednesday, September 18. All are invited to the event which will take place from 2pm to 4pm. It will be chaired by the Older People’s Council Executive, Susan O’Connor and addressed by the Ombudsman, Ger Deering. Light refreshments will be provided for those attending the event. Information will also be provided at several stands located throughout the room.

Japanese Gardens

What a fantastic evening in Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens Tramore recently for the annual Summer Fundraising Concert. They were delighted to welcome Yasuko Naka from Japan. Yasuko played the harp and sang in English, Japanese and Gaeilge. Members of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann Trá Mhór, also delighted the audience with some wonderful music. There was a great turnout, and the weather was pleasant. Yasuko also entertained the audience with some Japanese stories and intriguing introductions to her music, including the history and popularity of Irish music and song in Japan, revealing that many of our older traditional melodies are used in Japanese TV advertisements.

Tramore ECO

The main objective of the Tramore ECO Group’s #ProtectOurDunes campaign is to raise public awareness around the value of sand dunes, how dunes are formed and the potential damage that can be caused to dunes from human activity. The activities can damage our sand dunes, including trampling on the dunes, sliding down the dune face, wild camping and campfires, sports training and roaming dogs. We can protect them by staying off the dunes, keeping to designated pathways and camping areas, following the direction of local signage and watching wildlife from a distance.

Sea Rescue Association

A huge thank you to Newtown and Guillamene Swimming Club for their generous donation to Tramore Sea Rescue Association following last months very successful Snámh Fada. Their lifeboat crew offered safety support on the day alongside volunteers from Water Safety Ireland Waterford, Tramore Order of Malta and local kayakers. Well done to everyone who completed the swim for the first time.

Pigeon Racing

The sky’s over the Tramore Race Course were darkened recently with the race release of thousands of pigeons by the South Leinster Association of Pigeon Racing. Pigeon racing is a sport and a passion that has a long and deep-rooted history in Ireland and Britain. While the origin of pigeon racing dates to the early 19th century, pigeons can be seen documented in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics in 3000 BC. These ancient Egyptian pigeons were messenger pigeons that would carry information from place to place. Today, pigeon racing is a quietly popular and sometimes lucrative sport, with one of Dublin’s few remaining pigeon racing clubs located in Inchicore, Dublin 8.

Tramore Lifeboat

The local RNLI group in Tramore was thrilled to witness Rescue 117 Winch Operator Sarah, and 'Winchman', Debbie making history in Waterford as the first all-female technical crew on shift. They are outstanding role models for girls and young women. Congratulations and best wishes from the entire Tramore Lifeboat RNLI crew.
