Yesterday afternoon, Labour councillor John Pratt was voted new Cathaoirleach of the Dungarvan-Lismore Electoral District.

The Tallow native will take over from outgoing Cathaoirleach Cllr Niamh O’Donovan (FG).

Cllr Pratt’s party colleague Cllr Thomas Phelan will serve as Leas-Cathaoirleach for the year ahead.

During yesterday’s AGM held in the Dungarvan Civic Offices, Pratt received six votes from elected members. Independent councillor Joe O’Riordan was also proposed for the position, receiving three votes.

Upon being elected, Cllr Pratt congratulated outgoing Cathaoirleach Niamh O’Donovan and thanked his proposers Cllr Thomas Phelan and Cllr Tom Cronin.

Cllr Pratt was first elected to Waterford City and County Council in 2009.

He has previously served as Mayor of Waterford city and county and has served as Mayor Seamus Ryan's Deputy Mayor of city and county for the past twelve months.

A strong year

During the AGM, Cllr Niamh O’Donovan was congratulated by councillors and Council executive staff for her tenure as Cathaoirleach.

Cllr O'Donovan became Cathaoirleach of the District just one a year after her first election to the Council in 2024. 

Councillors praised her for her professional, fairness and honesty.

“As my term as Cathaoirleach of the Dungarvan and Lismore District comes to and end, I’d like to sincerely thank everyone who supported me throughout what has been a very special and rewarding year. It has been a great honour and privilege to serve in this role and to represent the people of our District" Cllr O'Donovan said yesterday.

“I am extremely grateful to my fellow councillors for your support, cooperation and friendship of the past year. To the many community groups, volunteers, schools, businesses, sporting organisations and local committees I met throughout the year, thank you for the warm welcome you extended to me as Cathaoirleach. The community spirit that exists across Dungarvan and Lismore is something we can all be proud of.”
