West Waterford had a bumper few weeks of wins, victories and success, the district council has heard.
Votes of congratulations are a way for councillors to celebrate local success stories at monthly council meetings.
But there was an unusually high number at the October sitting of the Dungarvan-Lismore District Council.
One of those celebrating wins was the Cathaoirleach herself Cllr Niamh O’Donovan whose Na Deise Ladies Junior C football team took home the county final earlier this month.
But the councillor expressed gratitude for all the district's wins.
“Isn’t it just so fantastic to have so many success stories at the start of the meeting,” said Cllr O’Donovan.
Cllrs Thomas Phelan, John Pratt, Donnchadh Mulcahy, Cllr Joe O’Riordan and Tom Cronin all extended their congratulations to Cllr O’Donovan and her team.
“We don’t usually have a champion league Cathaoirleach up at the top table and it was Junior C that you won, so congratulations to you and your colleagues,” said Cllr Phelan.
Votes of congratulations were also extended to Ballyduff, Lismore and St Pats Junior A teams for their wins.
“It’s fantastic to see young women competing like this and the finals were absolutely fantastic.
“So congratulations to everyone involved in ladies’ football,” said Cllr O’Riordan.
The footballers were not the only ones to have a super few weeks.
Cllrs Pat Nugent and Damien Geoghegan extended votes of congratulations to Dungarvan cyclist David Gaffney on his bronze medal at the European Junior Men’s Road Race championship in France.
They also noted his success in signing a 2026 contract.
“He is definitely a young man making a great name for himself in the cycling world. It really made people sit up and look at him last week with the result in France,” said Cllr Geogehan.
Cllr Geoghegan also extended his congratulations to the organisers of the Déjà Vu motorsport rally, which took place in Waterford earlier this month.
“It was absolutely fantastic. They did the rally here throughout the entire county and went over Mahon Falls. Looked absolutely magnificent. Through Dunmore East, down along the Copper Coast. But they were based in Dungarvan for a couple of days,” said Cllr Geoghegan.
Cllr Phelan also said it was a fantastic event.
“There was a fantastic buzz around the town over the weekend, particularly yesterday morning, and to see all these exotic cars, and as we move into the electric car era, we will be coming to an end, unfortunately, in terms of the combustion engine.
“So it’s kind of bittersweet for many people there yesterday. But it was a fantastic event, and I hope we see more of its like in the future,” said Cllr Phelan.
Cllr Nugent and Cllr O’Donovan submit a vote of congratulations to Tom Beausang for his ploughing championship win.
In the business world, the Cathaoirleach congratulated Blossom and Berry in Lismore and The Hat Maker in Dungarvan on their success, as well as Cocoa by Judit for their gold medal at Blas na hÉireann.
