Waterford City and County Council has received €100,000 in funding for the continuation of phased repairs works to Blackfriars Abbey on Conduit Lane.

The Dominican priory of St. Saviour was established by 1230 within the Anglo-Norman defences of the Viking city, when it consisted of a nave and chancel, a belfry and chapel. Its associated buildings included a dormitory, chapterhouse, library, kitchen, storehouse, three halls and various other chambers, as well as a cemetery and gardens until its dissolution in 1541.

Rosemary Ryall, Conservation Officer, Waterford City and County Council welcomed the funding, saying, “The funding provided by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage will continue to support the built heritage in Waterford city and county.”

Additionally, new signage outside the Abbey features illustrations by archaeologist Dave Pollock and gives a brief history of the Abbey, details of its original layout and information on previous works granted aided by the Community Monument Fund (CMF).

The core aims of this funding is the conservation, maintenance, protection and presentation of archaeological monuments, enabling conservation works to be carried out on monuments which are deemed to be significant and in need of urgent support.

(Funded by the Local Democracy Scheme)
