There were scenes of great celebration in the Portlaw area of County Waterford recently when local woman, Teresa O’Connor, celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends.
Members of the local community were also present to join in the celebrations for one of the local areas most respected and popular citizens.
The party took place in the local community hall and there was a great atmosphere on the day.

Teresa was in great form remembering people from times past and talking to some of those present about family members of theirs going back generations.
Teresa saw a remarkable number of events and changes during her lifetime including WWII, the Cold War, the fall of the Berlin Wall, JFK's assassination and the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mass for Teresa was celebrated by Fr Francis and Fr Liam and the party took place following the mass.
In her younger years Teresa trained as a confectioner and was employed in Frank Madder’s, Portlaw Bakery, where she imparted her skills to many of her young apprentices.

Very talented in her profession, she enjoyed teaching the skills of the craft to the apprentices.
Such was her ability and reputation, whenever there was a wedding Teresa was the person who everyone consulted with about their wedding cake.
However, her creations were more than just ‘cakes’ and were widely regarded as veritable works of art.
They were often displayed in a beautiful glass display cabinet in Jack Corcoran's shop on Bridge Street.
Memories of local peoples weddings always included Teresa.

Such is her popularity that large numbers of people turned up to wish Teresa best wishes on her milestone day. It was day she thoroughly enjoyed.
