Fake passport leads to Waterford court appearance

Waterford Courthouse

A 61-year-old man has appeared in Waterford District Court for using a fraudulent passport.

The issue was first flagged when the man attempted to obtain a PPSN number using an invalid British passport, which was under the name and image of a man who had been deceased for some time.

The issue was flagged via the Department of Social Protection’s facial recognition system.

Gardai were notified, and the man was charged contrary to Section 26 of the Theft and Fraud Offences Act. This charge includes using a British passport in the name of a man who is deceased, with the intention of inducing another person to accept it as genuine.

His defense solicitor informed the court last week that his client is worried that if he receives a conviction, his status as an International Protection Applicant may be jeopardised.

If the man comes to no further adverse attention in the next 12 months, the matter will be struck out.
