Emergency Response Payments are to be made available to Waterford homes affected by Storm Chandra.

That's according to Minister of State for Planning & Local Government, John Cummins TD, who said the payments provide financial support for people whose homes are damaged from flooding and severe weather events and who are unable to meet emergency costs for essential needs, household items and structural repair.

The payments were initially allocated to homes affected in counties Wexford, Wicklow and Dublin.

While the Department of Social Protection still hadn't Waterford included in the counties to be covered, on its website at the time of publishing, Minister Cummins confirmed the scheme is to be extended to Waterford.

Stage 1 of the scheme is available from today until next Wednesday.

Minister Cummins said: “An Emergency Response Payment is available to people living in properties in areas directly affected by flooding. This storm caused significant damage across the country and this payment is about getting help to people quickly at a time when many are dealing with damage and uncertainty."

“I want to acknowledge Council workers across the country who have been carrying out essential works in extremely difficult conditions," said Minister Cummins.

"This scheme is an essential lifeline for families who have encountered unexpected expenses as a result of storm damage," he added.

"I would encourage anyone affected to access the supports available by contacting the Community Welfare Service on 0818 60 70 80.”

Minister Cummins has also confirmed that where needed, the Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment will activate the Business and Community Flooding Support Scheme, working with local authorities and the NDFEM.

This scheme supports business, community and voluntary organisations affected by flooding who cannot obtain flood insurance.
