Driven around the bend - UHW dangerous crossings

University Hospital Waterford, October 2025.

The fractious road conditions around University Hospital Waterford were raised at a recent meeting. Cllr Declan Barry (Ind) said: "I brought up 12 months ago regarding the pedestrian crossing at the hospital on the Dunmore Road. We all know it's too close to the roundabout, it's a really busy area, a lot of footfall over and back.

"Cars are nearly having to stop on the roundabout when people are crossing that. I think (Active Travel Senior Engineer) Michael Murphy said something about moving it closer to the Ardkeen Stores area. Here we are, 12 months later, I want to know, is there any plan for that to happen?"

Senior resident engineer Paul Johnston said: "We'll have to look at the issue of pedestrian crossings at the hospital on the Dunmore Road. I wasn't aware of that conversation with Active Travel but we will certainly follow it up and come back to you."

In 2024, €5.7 million was approved by the National Transport Authority to fund Active Travel schemes in Waterford City and County.

Funded by the Local Democracy Scheme
