‘Don’t it always seem to go’: Councillor proposes paving over green space in Waterford estate
Waterford City and County Council have said it is not in favour of reducing green spaces in estates to facilitate parking.
Senior Planner Aisling O’Sullivan and Senior Roads Engineer Roger Noonan both objected to the suggestion made by Councillor Declan Clune at the September sitting of Comeragh District Council.
Cllr Clune said that when the estate in Portlaw was built, it wasn’t envisioned that households would have up to four cars each.
He said providing more spaces would make the estate safer and easier to navigate, especially for children on bikes.
“The request is that some of the green area be removed. It’s a broad agreement between residents because they say it's just so congested and the green area is wasted space to a certain extent,” said Cllr Clune.
Mr Noonan said that isn’t a decision he could make, but rather management would have to consider the request.
“I note your comments on green space. It’s easy to remove it, but obviously there are other people who would say we shouldn’t remove green space. So, it’s a bigger decision than just picking one estate for more parking spaces,” said Mr Noonan.
Ms O’Sullivan said that green space is a condition of nearly all planning permission and so her section would object to the request.
“You know we wouldn’t be in favour of reducing any public green spaces, just to provide car parking,” said Ms O’Sullivan.
