The existing green area and playground in Portlaw, where major upgrades are currently planned.

A largescale outdoor development currently in the works in Portlaw, has been backed by councillors in the area.

The development involves the regeneration of the Play Field in Portlaw, immediately adjacent to the village’s National School.

The proposed project has been in development for a number of years.

The existing playground area will be enlarged and enhanced as part of the plans. Also planned is the construction of a five-a-side astroturf pitch with fencing, an outdoor gym area, playing pitch and 90 seat auditorium.

The development was recently opeedn for public consultation.

Conor O’Neill, SEE, Economic Development at Waterford Council, explained at a meeting of Waterford councillors last week that eleven submissions were made by the public, all of which were positively in favour of the development.

He asked for the support of the Comeragh District members, who unanimously backed the development.

Cllr John O’Leary said: ”It’s a welcome development for Portlaw, which is a growing area and I think the park there and what they are seeking to ascertain will be positive for Portlaw and will serve the community. Facilities like this are hugely important. When there is population growth, it is hugely important that it proceeds."

Cllr Seanie Power added: “It’s great for Portlaw, especially where it is situated right across from the school. It will be a huge addition for the kids to come across and play."

A Council report outlines that the development will 'be of significant benefit both in terms of community infrastructure and the general amenity/wellbeing of the local community. Waterford City and County Council have a strong track record of driving successful regeneration projects, e.g. Cappoquin and it is envisaged that the Public Park regeneration at the Play Field, Portlaw would be equally successful providing high quality amenities for the community."
