Bishop Alphonsus Cullinan lead over a thousand people through Waterford City at the weekend for the Corpus Christi Procession and in doing so he consecrated Ireland to the Sacred Heart Over.

The procession took place on Sunday, June 22, and was a joyful and deeply reverent procession bearing public witness to the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist.

The procession began at the Sacred Heart Church on the Folly, travelled along Ballytruckle Road, Johnstown and Michael Street, into Barronstrand Street before concluding with Benediction at the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity.

There was a powerful sense of faith, unity and joy as families, clergy, religious, and parishioners proudly and prayerfully made their way through the city.

Following the procession, Bishop Cullinan led a special Consecration of Ireland to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, at the Cathedral, joining in spiritual communion with the four Archbishops of Ireland who were simultaneously consecrating the nation at the National Marian Shrine in Knock.

The celebration was especially significant as it took place during the Month of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, traditionally dedicated to reflecting on the immense love of Christ symbolised in His Sacred Heart. Bishop Cullinan said: "This act of consecration is a powerful moment of grace. To entrust our country once more to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is to invite his love, mercy, and healing into our lives, our Church, and our nation."

"It is my prayer that this will mark a deep renewal of faith and hope for all the people of Ireland," said Bishop Cullinan.

The centuries-old feast of Corpus Christi, instituted as a universal celebration by Pope Urban IV in 1264, remains one of the Church’s most cherished expressions of faith.

This year’s procession highlighted its continued relevance and vitality.

Bishop Cullinan extended heartfelt thanks to all who helped bring the day to life, including parish volunteers, choirs, clergy, and families.

He gave special thanks to Civil Defence and the Order of the Knights of St Columbanus for their generous support in organising and stewarding the event.

“Their presence and service were invaluable in ensuring a safe and prayerful experience for all,” he said.

“We are deeply grateful to An Garda Síochána, city authorities, and all who walked, prayed, sang, and gave witness to the light of Christ in our midst. May the Sacred Heart of Jesus continue to bless our homes, our communities, and our beloved country.”
