The closure of the lay-by in Colligan to prevent illegal dumping is under review, Waterford City and County Council has said.

The Director of Roads, Gabriel Hynes, told councillors at the Dungarvan-Lismore District Council at the November sitting that they hadn’t wanted to close off the lay-by.

Mr Hynes was responding to Cllr Kate O’Mahoney, who said the closure has not prevented illegal dumping in the area.

“Look, we know the reasons why the lay-by in Colligan has been closed off- it's due to illegal dumping, but there are reports of rubbish being dumped on the left-hand side of the road past the lay-by. So the issue of illegal dumping remains.

“It's a funny one because it seems like closing it off indefinitely hasn't really addressed the issue as we had hoped, and I suppose we are looking to see if there is an update on when it might be opened up again,” said Cllr O’Mahoney.

Mr Hynes responded: “I agree with you closing off a lay-by to prevent illegal dumping. It was something we did reluctantly, but it is under review.” Funded by the Local democracy Reporting Scheme.
