The asbestos clean-up of private properties will begin today, according to Waterford City and County Council.

The Council have commissioned the Gravity Asbestos Removal group to aid with asbestos removal following a large-scale fire that ravaged the Tycor Business Centre in Waterford City on Saturday, May 9.

While there has been no marked increase in asbestos presence in the air, materials and debris ridden with the potentially carcinogenic fibres have been identified at the site.

Residents of Morrison’s Avenue, Griffith Place and Tycor Avenue are asked to avoid the area.

The perimeter of the business park is dotted with air quality monitoring systems.

The HSE have issued a series of guidelines for residents in the area:

  • - Do not touch/remove any debris, ash or soot particles.
  • - If necessary, dampen down dust particles with a light dousing of water. It is important not to disturb or aerosolise particles. Do not use a power hose.
  • - Do not brush debris.
  • - Do not use a vacuum.
  • - Do not cut/mow grass.
  • - Do not bring debris, dust, ash, or suspected ACMs (Asbestos Containing Materials) into your home on footwear or clothing.
  • - Remove and clean footwear before entering the house, where possible.
  • - Wash hands thoroughly after any outdoor activities.

If dust or debris have entered residents' homes, they are asked to clean affected surfaces with gloves and disposable damp cloths or wet wipes, and to seal them in a bag immediately after use.

Sealed bags can be placed outside their residence and collected by the on-site specialists.

“The Council continues to work closely with the building owners and relevant specialists to ensure the site is fully remediated and managed appropriately and would like to thank members of the public for their patience and cooperation while these works are being carried out,” a spokesperson for the Council said.

Concerned members of the public can contact the Council at 0818 10 20 20.
