€16m worth of cannabis seized in south east

The seized drugs with an estimated street value of €16 million.

Cannabis worth over €16 million was seized by Gardai in the south east.

The discovery of the drugs was made on Saturday, August 10, by Gardaí assisted Revenue officers, at Rosslare Europort.

In a statement to Waterford News & Star, a Garda spokesperson said approximately 783 kgs of herbal cannabis and 70 kgs of cannabis resin, with an estimated value of approximately €16,086,000, was seized.

"The suspected illegal drugs were discovered when Revenue officers, with the assistance of An Garda Síochána, stopped and searched an unaccompanied freight unit which had disembarked a ferry," said the spokesperson.

The drugs are now subject to analysis by Forensic Science Ireland (FSI). No arrests were made an investigations into the matter are ongoing.
