Councillors heard updates on the N25.

Councillors for the Piltown Municipal District came to the Rhu Glenn Hotel to hear the latest updates on various road safety schemes.

Area engineer for Kilkenny County Council (KCC) John Tennyson informed the council about ongoing works in the vicinity, including a €300,000 scheme for N25 Safety Improvement Works.

He said: "These are improvement works and visibility improvements at various junctions along the N25. The feasibility report was submitted to TII (Transport Infrastructure Ireland) again. The TII have not come back yet and there has been further engagement with TII on it.

"It is hoped that a response will be received this month.

He added: "Once TII have made their comments and approved it, a program of works can be scheduled."

Mr. Tennyson gave further updates on surrounding schemes. For the N29 Slieverue Roundabout (cost of €900,000), he said: "The ancillary drainage and prep works have been completed."

The contractor has confirmed a start date for resurfacing works for October 7, with the project expected to be completed by end of October. Works on the roundabout itself will be planned for off-peak hours to minimise traffic impact.

For the N24 Carrick Road Mooncoin Safety Scheme, Mr. Tennyson stated: "The Commission has indicated an oral hearing will be carried out. The board has approved an extension of time for submissions to November 30, 2026, and the KCC team are now preparing and reviewing documentation.

Mr. Tennyson gave an overview of works in the Ferrybank area and interaction with Waterford City and County Council (WCCC).

He said: "On the North-South Link Road, archeology surveys and fencing along the temporary CBO route is now underway. The Abbey and Belmont upgrades, the Part Eight package has been received. It's been issued to WCCC for review...

"The N29 Port Road upgrade received comments from the TII in the detailed design report currently in discussion with TII. We have the same, and the Piltown RDF tenders have been received and we are conducting a tender assessment at present.

"With the urban speed limit review, TII have sent back their responses to proposed changes on the national road network. The road design office are now incorporating these into our speed limit maps. The maps will be presented to elected members for sign at the October plenary meeting on October 19. A report would be distributed to members prior to sign for review."
