A man in his 30s has died after his car was found in the River Bride near the Conna Road R628 in Co Cork.

It is understood the man was on his way home from a shift in a nursing home in east Cork, and had planned to meet with friends, but never showed up.

He had left work at around 10pm, with the accident likely occurring shortly afterwards.

Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to the car in the water of the river shortly before 10am on Saturday, after a member of the public spotted it. It is believed that the car had been in the water for several hours at this point.

The driver and sole occupant of the car was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body was brought to Cork University Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

Conna Community Council posted a statement on social media where they extended condolences to the victim's family on behalf of the local community.

They said that they were “deeply saddened” to hear of the tragic passing of a local man following a car accident.

“Our thoughts and heartfelt sympathies are with his family, friends and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time."

The road remains closed pending a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators, and local diversions are in place.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact them.

Any road users who may have camera footage, including dash cam, and were travelling on the Conna Road R628 between 10pm on Friday December 19th and 10am on Saturday, December 20th, have been asked to make their footage available to investigating gardaí.
