The Whelan family: Investing in efficiency and the future of dairy farming

Father and son farmers John and Steven Whelan on their dairy farm in Co. Wexford

The Whelan family has built a progressive and efficient dairy enterprise in Co. Wexford, transforming a modest 30-acre farm with just 16 cows into a thriving business now milking 295 cows across three farms.

Over the last 30 years, John and Margaret Whelan, together with their family, have steadily expanded the enterprise, which now operates on 77 hectares at a stocking rate of 3.9 cows per hectare. Their story reflects long-term commitment, careful investment and a focus on improving efficiency across the farm.

Family remains central to the farm’s success. John works alongside his son Steven, who manages the dairy enterprise and is preparing to take over the business. Sean, Katie and Padraig also play active roles, helping wherever needed and contributing to the strong family effort behind its continued development.

On Wednesday, 29 July, from 11am to 3pm, the Whelan family will open their gates to farmers and industry representatives, offering an opportunity to see their modern dairy operation firsthand and learn more about the decisions that have shaped its growth.

Visitors will experience the GEA T8500 50-Bail Rotary Parlour, installed in 2023, with leading GEA rotary milking specialist Glen Palmer from New Zealand explaining its key features.

Industry suppliers will also be on hand to share practical advice on herd management, housing, feeding and milking, with useful insights for anyone considering future improvements on their own farm.

Everyone is welcome to attend at Ballgarvan, Gusserane, Co. Wexford (Y34 TF64).
