Gardaí are investigating after two men were observed casually examining what appeared to be a gun with a telescopic sight mounted to it, in broad daylight on the Main Street, in the town of Kilmallock, Co Limerick.

Video footage of the men and the long sniper-type firearm at Sarsfield Street in Kilmallock, last Saturday February 14th, was shared across social media.

As men and women around the country were doing some last-minute shopping for cards, chocolates and dinner reservations for Valentine’s Day, the two men in the footage appeared to be fawning over the gun or imitation gun.

Gardaí said they were investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, which was captured on mobile phone video footage.

Sources said gardaí were investigating whether or not the men were involved in nefarious activities or if they were involved in hunting in the rural community.

Another theory being examined was that the firearm was an imitation firearm.

At one stage in the video footage, it appeared that one of the two men in the footage was taking a picture or video of the gun with a mobile phone.

A member of the public walking along a footpath near the two men glances over in the direction of the men as they appear to be examining the gun.

A Garda spokesman said: “Gardaí received a report of an incident where a male was alleged to be in possession of a firearm in Kilmallock, Co. Limerick on Saturday 14th February 2026.”

“Enquiries are ongoing,” they added.

There were no reported incidents involving a firearm in the Limerick area following the incident.

The video footage shows the two men standing on the footpath at Sarsfield Street examining what appears to be a long rifle with a telescopic lens mounted to it, as traffic and pedestrians go past them.
