Local Notes: Hurling club news, masses, sympathies and singing group

Lots of events are taking place in Passage East
The death took place on Thursday, October 3, of Sonny Doherty (aged 97), of the Crossroads, Cheekpoint. Sonny was born to Andy Doherty and Margaret (nee: Hanlon) at 6 the Cottages, Cheekpoint. One of seven children, he was the last surviving member of the family which included Biddy, Joe, John, Bob, Ellen and Margaret. Like his father and brothers, Sonny went to sea at an early age, rising to the position of Bosun on the Queen Mary. He came ashore in the early 1970s and married Patricia (nee: Dwyer) and they had three children: Siobhan, Eamon and Jim. Sonny was never far from boats or the sea and up to 1996 was pilot officer for the Port of New Ross at Cheekpoint. He also fished salmon when he could and was a regular on Cheekpoint Quay up to recent years.
His wife Patricia died in 2020 and although recently he was finding it hard to get around he got his paper delivered each day from Powers Shop and kept abreast of current affairs and politics. He was held in the highest esteem by all in the area, young and old alike. He had a greeting for all who passed his front porch at the Crossroads and was only recently hospitalised. Sonny would have been 98 at his next birthday, at Halloween. His remains reposed at Tom Hennessy's Funeral Home on Sunday, October 6 and his Requiem Mass was on Monday, October 7, in St Nicholas' Church, Faithlegg, followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery. Predeceased by his wife Patricia in 2020, and his brothers and sisters, he survived by his sons Eamonn and Jim, and daughter Siobhán, and by his son-in-law Tom, daughters-in-law Laura and Susie, grandchildren Grace, Sam, Tessa, Hugh and Eoghan, sister-in-law Mary, nephews, nieces, extended family and many neighbours and friends.
