St Saviour’s

Special Mass

We celebrated the 50th Jubilee of Ballybeg and St Saviour's Parish with a special mass celebrated by Bishop Cullinan and concelebrated by Fr Robert Grant PP. Lovely to see so many of the parishioners old and new attend. Nice to see our public representatives, David Cullinane TD and Cllr. Donal Barry, in attendance. Some of the clubs in the area also attended. It was great to see the Good Shepard Nuns represented, including Sr. Vera, who was the last serving member of her community in Ballybeg where they worked for many years. The choir, under the direction of our long serving organist Barry Murphy, sang during the mass and the readings and prayers of the faithful were read by members of the community and school. The gifts were brought to the altar by children from the school. Tea, coffee and cakes were served in the community room by our parish nuns and everyone had a lovely time catching up. The school also had their special mass on the Wednesday and it was lovely to see a lot of former school teachers in attendance. The church of St Saviour's was opened in 1981, four years after the parish was formed and the Parish priest was Fr Lucy OP. The children’s choir sang at the opening mass and the organist was Greg Scanlon.

Sympathy

The writers of this column would like to offer our sympathy to the Delicato family on the death of Anthony (Tony) Delicato, who died on September 27 at Oak Ward UHW in his 95th year. His remains lay in repose in Tom Hennessy’s Funeral Home on Monday, September 29, and burial took place following requiem mass celebrated by Fr Tom Rogers PP in St John's Church and in St Mary's Cemetery, Ballygunner. Tony was a lovely man and he was the proprietor of Delicato’s Chipper, John Street, for many years with his family. Their specialty was 'steaketts' and you could bring in your own bowl and they would fill it with what you wanted. We offer our sympathy to his wife Ursula, his sons Dominic and Angelo, his daughters Antonia and Paula, granddaughter Jade, great grandson Louis, sister Gina, nephews, nieces, extended family and many friends. May his gentle soul rest in peace.

Well done

Bernie Hearne and Esther Fitzgerald of Ballybeg Park and Close would like to thank everyone who contributed and supported their recent coffee morning for Waterford Hospice. Over the last three years they have raised thousands of Euro. All monies raised have been lodged into Waterford Hospice account. Well done to both of them. They hold a great day every year and it's great to see the community support them as well as the Hospice.
