Passage, Waterford

The Late Tom Sullivan

The death took place at his home on March 3rd of Mr Tom Sullivan, Coolbunnia, Cheekpoint aged 85, after a short illness. Growing up in a fishing and seafaring Community, it was no surprise he followed on in the family’s history and went to sea at the age of 16. For a short while in the early 1960's he came ashore to run the family pub, Butlers.

However, the call of the sea was too much and he returned to sea once more. With the emergence of Bell Lines he took up a position within the company in 1977 until his retirement. Some of his proudest achievements was being on the maiden voyages of the Bell Racer and the Bell Pioneer from Asia to Waterford.

After his retirement he enjo

yed many years fishing for salmon and meeting up with his friends on Cheekpoint Quay for their daily chat.

A keen walker, he would stop and talk to anyone he met and explain the landmarks on view and local folklore. His weekly walk to the top of the Hurthill was, in his opinion, the nicest landmark he had seen, even after travelling the world for many years. He enjoyed socialising and was a well-known figure in Jack Meades where he welcomed anyone who wanted to chat in his company. His Requiem Mass, celebrated by Rev Fr PJ Breen PP, was in Faithlegg Church on Tuesday with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

He will be sadly missed by his family and within the Community and beyond. Predeceased by his wife Anne, he is survived by his daughters Annette and Theresa, son Tomas, son-in-law Seamus, grandchildren Alisha, Darragh, Kayleigh, Doireann and Hazel. Ar dheis de go raibh a anam dilis.

Crooke and Faithlegg Churches

Mass times in Crooke and Faithlegg Churches are: Wednesday, March 20 - Faithlegg (11.30am); Thursday, March 21 - Crooke (10am); Saturday, March 23 - Faithlegg (6.30pm); Sunday Vigil, March 23 – Crooke - 11.30am.

Cheekpoint and Faithlegg Development Group

As soon as the weather improves the local Tidy Towns group will arrange a community litter pick. The main road from Jack Meades to Cheekpoint is again badly littered. As soon as we have some brighter days to run a Community litter pick safely we will arrange it as soon as we can Passage Hurling The senior team had a challenge in St Molleran’s recently and all of the 30 present got a game. Training continues twice weekly in the gym and alley and on Sunday's in the field.

Fundraisers

A reminder of the next two fundraisers coming up. Sunday, July 16, the Annual Deep Water 600 metres Swim from Ballyhack to Passage for competent swimmers over 15. Sunday, July, the Annual Sponsored Cycle over usual course taking in County Wexford.

On the Inter County scene Waterford were beaten by a goal by Wexford in the National Hurling League in Walsh Park on Sunday week with both sides minus a number of their best players. The defeat means Waterford will play in the Division 1B next year against much weaker teams and also very poor attendances especially with funds so badly needed..

Notes Again a reminder to all club and community PRO's if you have one that notes are welcome from all by Thursday nights at 8pm to 087 6508307 where email will be passed on.
