Local Notes: Church bi-centenary, congratulations and a deep water swim reminder

Late Maria Hegarty

Mary Margaret (Maria) Hegarty, Late of Newtown, Passage East, Co. Waterford and Sandown Park Care Home, Windsor, England passed away at Sandown Park Care Home on May 4. 

Maria joined the Presentation Order at the age 16 and spent her life in various convents as a nun and also in hospitals as a Nursing Nun.

She was the eldest child of the family and was predeceased by her sisters Margaret and Kathleen, brothers Denis, Dan, Henry, Jerry and Pat. She was a very kind, loving and a very much loved sister and aunt, who had a great sense of humour and loved when her family could visit her and also loved her trips home to Newtown. 

Maria is survived by her brother Jim, sister Renee Power, her sisters-in-law Renée and Nora, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, her dear friend and cousin Maureen Bridge (Sullivan) and extended family and friends.

Her funeral arrangements will be announced later. Ar dheis dé go raibh a hanam

Mass Times

Masses in Crooke and Faithlegg Churches and cemeteries will be celebrated on: Wednesday, June 12 - Faithlegg at 11.30am; Thursday, June 13 - Crooke Cemetery Mass at 7.30pm; Friday, June 14 - Faithlegg Cemetery Mass at 7.30pm; Saturday, June 15 - Faithlegg at 6.30pm; Sunday Vigil, June 26 - Crooke at 11.30am.

Faithlegg 200

The Church of St Nicholas in Faithlegg marks its 200th Anniversary this year.

It needs painting and refreshing and it is hoped to have that starting on June 17. This will necessitate the Church closing for some time but the Saturday Vigil mass will be on as usual.

Sincere thanks to all those who contributed to the funding of this project and donations are still more than welcome.

Cemetery Masses

A final reminder that all the Cemetery Masses this year are in the coming week and all start at 7.30pm. The list is: Killea Cemetery - Wednesday, June 12; Crooke Cemetery - Thursday, June 13; and Faithlegg Cemetery - Friday, June 14. Please inform any of your relations outside County Waterford of the dates.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Vanessa Hartley, Knocknagapple, Passage East, on her recent appointment as head of Google Ireland. She is a past pupil of Passage East National School and is daughter of the late Jimmy and the late Dolores Hartley.

Community Fun Day

Sunday, June 3, at 2 pm is the day for the Annual Summer Community Fun Day on 'The Green', in Cheekpoint. 

Bring along a picnic table and chairs. Food will be available to purchase and there will be community stalls and a raffle. There will also be a Greasy Pole and children's events. It looks like there will be 'Wigs on the Green' that day.

Passage Hurling

The U13 team had a good win over Brickey Rangers in Passage last Thursday and meet Stradbally away on Wednesday of this week at 7pm. On Wednesday, June 19 they will play An Ghaeltacht, in Passage. The U10 team won the Ballyduff Upper Tournament recently and thanks to Ballyduff for the invitation and a great job done. The Passage mentors were Brian Carey and John Hogan. Congratulations to the entire team and mentors.

Deep Water Swim

A final reminder that the annual 'Beat the Ferryman' Enerpower sponsored Challenge 600 metres Deep Water Swim from Ballyhack to Passage for competent swimmers over 15, takes place on Sunday, June 16. No entries will be taken on the day either in Passage or Ballyhack and online entries close on Saturday, June 15, at 1pm to collectit.ie

The race briefing in Ballyhack will take place on the Quay before swimmers enter the water as they come across on the Ferry each time. The final ferry for swimmers to cross is for race at 1pm. The race begins at 1.30pm to 1.45pm depending on weather on the day.
