The Maxol WIT Wildcats U-18 team who this week completed a clean sweep of all competitions in the South East and Munster leagues.
Maxol WIT Wildcats’ underage programmes continue to dominate both on a regional and national level with the trophy cabinet already packed with silverware due to the massive success of their U-14 and U-16s this season.
This week it was the turn of the U-18 team as they completed a clean sweep of all competitions in the South East and Munster leagues. Unbeaten in the South East league Wildcats also found little difficulty in the regional cup competition to complete the double. However down through the years the Munster equivalent has eluded them as Cork teams have enjoyed almost a decade of dominance.
After a series of tough games it came down to the final game of the league to decide who would be champions. Last season’s champions Brunell from Cork City provided the opposition. The outcome of this game was in the balance but Abby Flynn, who was in sensational form, lifted her teammates to produce their best performance of the season to run out easy winners 64-38.
Wildcats had already won the Munster Cup final beating their old foes Glanmire in the final so the double was secured. The season is traditionally finished with the top four competition and once again Glanmire proved an easy task in the semi final (69-32). Now could Wildcats make it a clean sweep and win all three Munster competitions? Again Brunell stood in their way but this time with a game plan to play box and one to see if the could contain Abby Flynn, who had destroyed them in the league final. For a time their plan was effective but gradually Wildcats’ post player, Meibh Maher, started to dominate inside and by the halfway stage Brunell had a mountain to climb trailing (39-17).
For the remainder of the game the entire Wildcats team were awesome especially in defence and ran out comfortable winners (65-47). Congratulations to coach Tommy O’Mahony and manager Jane Daniels and their team on such a wonderful achievement.
WILDCATS: Maggie Fanning, Abby Flynn, Sarah Lyons, Emily Fleming, Robyn Morrissey, Meibh Maher, Debbie Ogayemi, Eva Daniels, Rachel Fitzgerald, Grainne Brown, Bami Alukayode, Anna Grogan and Kate Hickey.
