Waterford’s Raymond O’Mahony, second from right, with his Yale University team-mates after winning the Kilpatrick Cup at Lake Quinsigmond, Worcester, Massachusetts on Sunday last.

Waterford man Raymond O’Mahony was part of the Yale University team that won the famous Kilpatrick Cup for taking gold at the Eastern Sprints – the  US Annual Rowing Championship for the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges (EARC), which took place in Lake Quinsigmond, Worcester, Massachusetts on Sunday last.
Having come through their heat in third place earlier on Sunday morning and with tough weather conditions and turbulent winds, this Yale crew gave their all in a superb display of sheer determination and a magical Grand Final race saw them come through with gold.
A native of Maypark Lane on the Dunmore Road, a member of Waterford Boat Club and past pupil of De La Salle College Waterford, Raymond is in his second year as a recruited lightweight rower at the famous Ivy League college. He has rowed, unbeaten this season, in the stroke seat of the third Varsity LW8 boat with wins over Princeton, Harvard, Cornell, Navy and Columbia amongst others. It is expected Raymond will now be selected as one of the top rowers to represent Yale University Y150 Lightweight Crew at the US National Championships (IRAs) which takes place in June. Well done Raymond and Go Yale!
