Lismore 6-13 -
J. J. Kavanagh & Sons S.H.C. Round 1 Group B –
Amazing, extraordinary and unbelievable are words that spring to mind when attempting to describe what transpired in this opening round tie in Group B of the senior hurling championship in Fraher Field on Saturday last. I cannot recall in all my years following Waterford hurling a game turned on its head so completely and totally in a half hour of hurling and I doubt if we will see the like of it again.
What we had here was a totally dominant first half display by a Passage team in full flight and scoring almost at will against a Lismore side marking its return to senior ranks and looking totally out of their depth as they trailed by sixteen points at the break and were even flattered to be that close to their rampant opponents. No one, and certainly not Lismore, could have foreseen what was to transpire in the second half as two early goals by Maurice and Dan Shanahan set the Cathedral Town men on a road to redemption facilitated by a Passage team that sat back as though shell shocked until it was too late to call a halt to the rampaging Shanahan brothers and a Lismore side that had been transformed from likely relegation candidates in the first half top title contenders in the second…
