Allianz NHL Round 3 – Dublin v Waterford – Score by Score
1 – 15 mins. – Michael Walsh wins possession from a Dublin clearance and sets Pauric Mahony up for the opening point inside a minute. Niall McMorrow and Ben Quinn are wide with early Dublin efforts from outfield as is Gleeson for Waterford before Pauric Mahony’s free from the right wing into the Davin end comes back off the upright and Stephen Bennett reacts quickest to send the ball to the ne with five minutes played. Patrick Curran and Stephen Bennett are off target before Rian McBride draws the foul from Conor Gleeson and Donal Burke opens Dublin’s account in the 7th minute. Seconds later Eamonn Dillon wins the Waterford puck out, makes ground and sends over his first point of the game. The Dublin backs are now settling well into the game and working the ball well out of defence for Chris Crummy to send over a great point. Donal Burke levels the tie from his second free in the 14th minute and Eamonn Dillon follows up with the lead point after Conor Gleeson loses possession in midfield. Shane Bennett is fouled and Pauric Mahony levels the tie from the free.
16 – 25 mins. – Dublin are gaining the upper hand around the middle third as Rian McBride and Eamonn Dillon add excellent points from play and in the 18th minute sloppy defending on a high delivery into the Waterford goalmouth sees the ball breaking off Noel Connors to Donal Burke and the youngster slots it through to the far corner of the net. Mahony and Burke exchange points from frees and the five point margin between the teams is maintained as Mahony (F) and Dillon again exchange points.
25 – 35 mins. – Donal Burke is wide from an easy free following a foul on Conroy and Waterford spirits are lifted with a great point from Kevin Moran following good work by Michael Walsh and Austin Gleeson. Donal Burke is again wide from a free in a good position and Waterford hit back with another score from Moran on receipt of a great pass from De Burca. Austin Gleeson collects the Dublin puck out and returns the ball over the bar to leave two points between the teams. Waterford continue to pile on the pressure and, following a foul on Moran, Mahony makes it a one point game in the 34th minute. Dublin have the last word before the break however, as Burke finds the range again after De Burca fouls Dillon to send the home side in with a 1-10 to 1-8 lead at the break.
36 – 50 mins. – After Rian McBride shoots wide for Dublin Stephen Bennett starts the second half as he did the first when capitalising on Dublin keeper Conor Dooley’s failure to retain possession when coming away from goal and pouncing to send the ball with pin point accuracy to the empty net. The same player follows up with an excellent point from play and after Austin Gleeson hits Waterford’s sixth wide of the game Pauric Mahony shoots his side into a three point lead following a foul on Michael Walsh. Austin Gleeson is penalised for a fouled hand pass and Donal Burke is again on target from the free. Ryan O’Dwyer is out quick to the ball and sends over a point to cut the deficit to one but Austin Gleeson makes a determined run forward to send over his second point. Burke is wide for the third time from a seemingly comfortable free but points following a foul on Conway by Shane Fives. Shane Bennett wins O’Regan’s puck out and is brought down in full flight for Mahony to put Waterford two points clear again. Maurice Shanahan replaces Patrick Curran in the Waterford attack and, within seconds, shoots narrowly wide as Mikey Kearney replaces Jamie Barron.
50 – 70 mins. – Mahony extends Waterford’s lead to three points again from a free before Ryan O’Dwyer keeps Dublin in touch with his second point. McBride is wide for Dublin and from the puck out Stephen Bennett wins good ball and sets up Pauric Mahony for his second point from play. The roles are reversed in the 56th minute for Bennett to send over his second point of the game. McMorrow keeps Dublin hopes alive with a fine point in the 58th minute but Waterford’s reply is instant as Walsh makes a superb fetch from O’Regan’s puck out, is fouled and Mahony makes it a five point game again as Brian O’Halloran replaces Shane Bennett in the 60th minute. Maurice Shanahan makes his mark in the 64th minute when finishing a good move by Stephen Bennett for a point. Rian McBride replies with a point as Dublin pile on the pressure in the closing minutes to try and get something from this game. Shane Fives is the standout defender as time and again he comes away out of tight situations with the ball. Waterford empty the bench with Jake Dillon replacing Shane Bennett and Darragh Lyons coming in for Conor Gleeson in the 66th minute. Pauric Mahony completes the Waterford scoring with his twelfth point, from a free, in the 70th minute as the game moves into four minutes of added time. Dublin continue to press forward. Stephen Daniels sees Red on a second yellow card as Donal Burke slots over his side’s last score. In the last action of the game Mahony is wide from a free following a foul on O’Halloran but Waterford collect two vital points.
