Kilcohan Park – Saturday February 25th

While the closure of Harolds Cross stadium in Dublin is undoubtedly one of the most unpopular decisions ever taken by the Irish Greyhound Board there was a good news story for the area last Saturday night when Harolds Cross resident Tony Grassick captured the final of the Yahoo Kennels Open marathon event with his Cayan Tower 5/4 recording back to back victories in 40.76. Quickly into her stride ‘Cayan’ never saw another rival leading throughout from Kizomba before deservedly winning out by four lengths.
Portlaw based Shane O Gorman kindly sponsored this event which carried a first prize of €1,500 an excellent return for just two outings. Shane’s own top class performer Yahoo Perlena finished second in the 2015 Noel Ryan, Tree Surgeon, Munster Oaks at this venue and is awaiting news from the IGB as to whether or not ‘Perlena’ is promoted to first place after the winner allegedly tested positive for a banned substance.
Race 1, A7 525: Taking a flyer from trap six the Noel Power owned Kaiser Thumb 3/1 made no mistake recording a career best 29.26 return in the process. All About What raced in second spot throughout but ‘Kaiser’ was not for catching deservedly obliging by two and a half lengths.
Race 2, A4 525: Showing plenty of early pace the Sean Burke owned and Peter Cronin trained Mustang Temora 4/5 made short work of the opposition sluicing up in a lively 28.91. Bellside Don kept tabs on the winner early on but ‘Mustang’ drew clear in the final quarter to score by five lengths.
Race 3, A8/A10 525: Well suited to an inside draw the Best Mates Syndicate owned Zip Express 5/2 made every stride a winning one in 29.60. Sparta Turbo was prominent throughout but ‘Zip’ having his just his second race outing prevailed by one and a half lengths.
Race 4, A4 525: Champagne Doll appeared to have this contest in the bag stretching into a clear back stretch lead over Jumbos Shihtzu 5/2. Staying on strongly however the Liam Corcoran owned ‘Jumbos’ finished with a flourish to deny Tagalong Dicey by two lengths in 29.22.
Race 5, A6 525: Local trainer Peter Cronin sent out his second winner of the session with the Margaret Walsh owned El Chapo 2/1 making a winning debut in 29.21. Enjoying a clear passage to the opening turn the early paced El Chapo led early on from Minglers Simba and was really never in any danger of defeat cruising to five and a half lengths defeat of Blue Shrew.
Race 6, A3 525: The following three races were heats of the Larry O Rourke A3 stake with four qualifying from each heat. Heat one saw the David McGrath owned and Donal Murphy trained Badminton Blonde 3/1 utilise her early pace to lead all the way in 29.07. Longslip Billy was flying at the finish but failed by half a length to overhaul ‘Badminton’.
Race 7, A3 525: In the second qualifier 5/2 chance Coco Magic got the better of a back stretch duel with Corock Messi. Owned by Mary Flynn and trained by Nick Turner ‘Coco’ kept on well at the head of affairs to account for a hampered Droopys Florenzi by three lengths in 29.16.
Race 8, A3 525: The concluding heat saw Tagalong Roisin cut an early dash but she gave way at the third bend to the Graham Lynch owned Toker Rio 6/4. After a slow start Mumhan Red was doing all his best work in the closing stages but failed by a head to overhaul ‘Toker’ in 29.11.
Race 9, DDO 730: See introduction.
Race 10, A5 525: Having taken over in the lead at the penultimate bend from Bitofapuzzle Willmount Manor appeared all set to win out. Timing her effort to perfection however the Maria Byrne owned Dysert Mia 5/2 produced a flying finish on the outside to deny ‘Willmount’ by a short head in 29.30.
Race 11, A1 525: The Brendan Frayne owned Honest Suckle 3/1 recorded the fastest time of the night producing a pleasing front running effort to triumph in 28.73. Tagalong Hawkeye was in the winners slipstream throughout but sticking to the task ‘Honest’ went on to triumph by three and a half lengths. Nobody had the Tote trio on this race and the first race this coming Saturday will have a minimum guaranteed pool of €500.
