Allianz NHL Round Two – Waterford v Tipperary – Score by Score

First Half
1 – 10 mins. – Tipperary win the toss and elect to play into the breeze blowing from the dressing room end, opening the scoring with a John McGrath point from a free inside a minute. The teams are level for the first time with Tom Devine opening Waterford’s account with a fine strike two minutes later. Brendan Maher breaks through the centre of the Waterford defence before going to ground under pressure from Conor Gleeson for McGrath to puts Tipperary back into the lead from the free. Pauric Mahony levels matters again from a free before Shane Bennett is brought down on a clear run towards goal resulting in a yellow card for Tipp’s Tommy Hamill and the lead for Waterford from Mahony’s free with eight minutes played. A short sideline cut from Gavin O’Brien to Austin Gleeson sets up a clear scoring chance but the Sion man shoots the first wide of the game.
11 – 20 mins. John McGrath points from play to level matters and Austin Gleeson is again wide from a good position before Pauric Mahony puts Waterford back in front from a free on his own ‘45’ after a foul on McNulty. Niall O’Meara gets on to a long clearance by James Barry to bring the sides level once again with a fine score in the 16th minute. From the puck out Mikey Kearney wins possession and sends over for the lead point again but from Daragh Mooney’s puck out Padraic Maher picks out Brendan Maher and the teams are level again at 0-5 each. A let off for Tipp in the 18th minute as a great angled strike by Shane Bennett on a bouncing ball screams wide at the far post with Mooney beaten. Tadhg De Burca sets Gavin O’Brien up for a fine point in the 19th minute but Conor Gleeson concedes the free under the puck out and John McGrath sends over to level for the sixth time at 0-6 each.
21 – 36 mins. Austin Gleeson makes a great catch from O’Regan’s puck out, is fouled and Mahony shoots the home side back into the lead. Gavin O’Brien is narrowly wide after great work by Dillon, Moran and Kearney. Another great chance for Austin Gleeson but again he sends narrowly wide. Jason Forde brings the teams level again but again Mahony puts his side back into the lead following a foul on Noel Connors inside his own half. Steven O’Brien quickly replies for Tipp as John O’Dwyer replaces Aidan McCormack in their attack. Austin Gleeson wins the puckout and combines with Moran and Mahony for the latter to shoot Waterford back into the lead from play. Austin Gleeson wins possession from a Waterford free by Ian O’Regan but again his shot is wide of the posts for the fourth time. Tipperary gain the upper hand in the closing minutes of the half with points from McGrath, O’Dwyer (F) and Forde to one coming back in reply from a Mahony free to give the visitors a 0–11 to 0–10 half time lead.

Second Half
36–45 mins. – A free to Tadhg de Burca puts Waterford on the attack but Shane Bennett is wide with an early chance. From the puck out Steven O’Brien wins the ball and extends the Tipperary lead to two points. Another chance to Bennett in the 39th minute from a Conor Gleeson clearance is sent wide of the post but it finally comes right for Austin Gleeson in the 40th minute when he collects a low ball from Gavin O’Brien and sends over to leave a point between the teams again.Kieran Bergin hits back with a Tipp point and after Shane McNulty sees yellow for a trip on Brendan Maher O’Dwyer makes it a three point game again. Noel Connors receives yellow card for a foul on Padraig Maher but O’Dwyer is wide from the free. A minute later he makes amends with a point from play and Tipp are four points clear with just ten minutes of the second half played.
46 – 55 mins. – Waterford send on Stephen Bennett and Colin Dunford for Jake Dillon and Gavin O’Brien respectively. The ball breaks for Shane Bennett but he is promptly brought to ground and Mahony points the free. Tipp look to strengthen their grip on the game as Noel McGrath is sent on for Jason Forde. Austin Gleeson loses possession and the ball is cleared to Steven O’Brien whose run at goal is stopped illegally inside the 12 metre square by Tadhg De Burca at the expense of a yellow card and a penalty in the 52nd minute. John O’Dwyer steps up to face Ian O’Regan but the goalkeeper makes a brilliant save and clearance.Austin Gleeson and Seamus Kennedy receive yellow cards for getting into a tangle as a John O’Dwyer free puts Tipperary four points clear again.
56 – 70 mins. – Michael Breen replaces Kieran Bergin in midfield for Tipperary and Mahony points a free after Joe O’Dwyer gets a yellow card for a foul on De Burca. Niall O’Meara wins his goalkeeper’s puck out and lays off to Noel McGrath whose shot to the top left hand corner of the net is brilliantly saved by the diving O’Regan at full stretch but the rebound is met in the air by John McGrath and batted to the net. Seamus Callanan replaces O’Brien in the Tipperary attack and Maurice Shanahan comes on board for Mikey Kearney and Brian O’Halloran for the injured Colin Dunford. Another wide from Shane Bennett as Michael Cahill replaces Joe O’Dwyer in the Tipp defence. Maurice Shanahan puts Shane Bennett through but his shot produces a great save from Daragh Mooney and a second shot on the rebound from Stephen Bennett is also blocked down. Waterford are denied a clear penalty when Stephen Bennett is brought to ground when attempting to contest a lob into the goalmouth from De Burca. Brian O’Halloran pulls back a point in the 65th minute but Tipperary come back with points from John O’Dwyer (F) and John McGrath. With the game in four minutes of added time O’Halloran has the final say with his second point but Tipperary are comfortable six point winners at the final whistle.
