WATERFORD’S Green Party candidate Grace O’Sullivan says that while naturally disappointed, she is happy with the party’s performance in the constituency.

The party received their highest percentage of first preference votes in Waterford; with the first time candidate receiving 4.3% of the first preference votes.

In 2011 the Greens received just 462 first preference votes compared to 2,237 this time. Previously the party’s best performance in Waterford had been the 2002 General Election where 1,361 voters gave┬áBrendan McCann their number one.

O’Sullivan said the positive results provides the party with a solid foundation as they look to the future.

She told the Waterford News & Star: “This is the highest number of votes we’ve received in the county and that’s very significant. When I got involved with the party two years ago during the European Elections there was very little space for the party in Waterford. We’re starting to build things up and I’m quite satisfied with the day.”
