Mary Butler on the right is congratulated by her sister Dolores

MOTHER of three, Mary  Butler made history at 5.15 m this afternoon when she became the first woman to be elected a TD for Fianna Fail in Waterford. She was elected on the first count with 262 votes over the 10341 quota and as she was raised shoulder high at the WIT sports centre she said she was quietly confident for the past week.

She said that she slept soundly last night and she is now happy to relinquish her seat on the Comeragh District Council. She also said that her part-time job at John Martin jewellers had already been taken in the last week.

“We were quietly confident based on the response on the doorsteps,” she said.
