PRESIDENT of WIT’s Student Union, Stephen O’Rourke, has been busy tending to one of the roses competing in this year’s Rose of Tralee festival after he was selected as an escort for the event.

23-year-old Stephen, from Castlewoods, Ballinamona, had to take part in a bootcamp before he was chosen to escort one of the lovely Roses for the duration of the festival which comes to a conclusion tonight (Tuesday).
Son of Brendan and Monica O’Rourke and a brother to Darragh and Ciara, Stephen is the only Waterford escort taking part in this year’s festival. His proud father Brendan, of local company BOR Construction, said, “We will definitely be keeping an eye out for him on the television. It’s a really good achievement and he is enjoying it.”
He said his son will be at the beck and call of his Rose and prior to the festival had to stock up on a number of items from Boots chemist, such as plasters, for the Rose, should the need arise.
“It’s a 24/7 job but he’s enjoying it and it will be good for him. Hundreds go for the position of escort every year and very few from outside of Dublin are chosen.”
Brendan said Stephen was delighted with the support of local shop, Fitzgerald’s Menswear, who kitted him out with a tux, suits and shirts, to ensure he looks his best all through the festival.
