Brilliant Brown bolts away with the prize
By Ger Lawton

OUR old friend the weather was at it again last weekend, with the cancellation of the Viking Classic in the US, which meant that we had two tournaments this week, well kind of one and a half.

The main event was the Singapore Open when my fellow Gunner supporter, hard luck to any Spurs fans out there this week (I had to get that in) Ian Poulter came out on top and we also had the World Matchplay Championship.

Because that was played over a fairly complicated format, we decided to keep it simple and award the ten points to the winner, nine points to the runner-up, eight to the third placed player and seven to the player who finished fourth.

But with those four players being fairly popular with our challengers, it added an extra bit of spice to the race for the eight weekly prize courtesy of John Mitchell’s Golf Shop.

Indeed, it made it the highest weekly score to date, with John Brown, a seasoned campaigner at this challenge coming out on top by six points, with a very healthy tally of 30 points.

His impressive haul was made up by Anthony Kim (9), Adam Scott (8), Angel Cabrera (7) and Anders Hansen (6). Good stuff John.

In second place this week was Michael Howlett, while the latest top five was completed by Charlie Ahearne, with two of his teams, and Michael Freeman.

So what did all this do for the overall leaderboard as we get closer and closer to finding out who will be heading off to Portugal with three friends, on us, in 2010?

There’s no change at the top of the pile as Seán Healy still leads the way with his Eagles High team, but the big news is that his lead has been cut. Last week he led by seven, this week it’s down to four and we also have a change in second with Robbie Burke bouncing back into the race on 76.

Ann McNamara and Julie Brennan both slip a place, to third and fourth respectively, while we now have a six way tie for fifth between, Ann McNamara (again), Brian Collins, Noel McLawrence, Micheal White, Gráinne Flynn and JJ Haran, meaning that just 15 points separate the top ten - oh man it’s going to be some climax......
