Ferrybank still not out of the relegation woods after loss
BY ADRIAN FLANAGAN

BOHEMIANS 2 FERRYBANK 0
FERRYBANK slipped to another defeat in the Umbro Premier League after losing to Bohemians under lights at Ben Wadding Park on Saturday evening last to remain in the relegation dogfight.

Although the Village outfit are currently six points clear of bottom side Southend United and still have to play the latter twice, this was a disappointing performance for Paul Cashin’s side against Bohemians in this game.

The home side never looked troubled and it was an easy night between the sticks for goalkeeper Paul Flynn, who was rarely, if never, threatened by a visiting side that conceded a goal in either half.

Bohemians were always in control of the tie and could have went in front after less than three minutes when Gerry Connors played the ball out wide left to Jamie Swift but his first time left-footed strike just went the wrong side of the left upright.

The opening goal did arrive on 27 minutes when Shane Nolan whipped in a perfect right-wing corner kick that found the head of the unchallenged Kevin Whittle and the midfielder powered a header to the back of the net past DJ Magee from eight yards.

Nolan went very close to doubling his sides advantage on 38 minutes when he ghosted into the penalty area at the back post to meet a Gerry Connors right-wing cross but thankfully from Ferrybank’s point of view, his shot came crashing back off the post.

The home side led the visitors a merry dance in the first half and it was Shane Nolan that went close to extending his sides lead four minutes into the second half but for the second time in the game, the youngster was denied by the woodwork as his 20-yard hit the bar and went over.

In a rare Ferrybank attack, Cormac O’Driscoll tried his luck with a 20-yard effort on 51 minutes but Paul Flynn got down well to save and at the other end, Bohemians grabbed their second goal as Bobby Keoghan scored a cracking free kick to leave Ferrybank with a mountain to climb.

Morgan Pender should have stretched his sides lead on 84 minutes when he latched onto a Bobby Keoghan pass but keeper Hugh Mullally made a decent save to ensure that his side only conceded twice when it could have been a lot more.

POINT GAINED
Meanwhile, Ferrybank did pick up a point from their midweek trip to Graun Park as they drew one all with Tramore. Cormac O’Driscoll scored a screamer from all of 25-yards but it wasn’t good enough as a stunning Robbie Phelan headed made sure that both sides had to be happy with a share of the spoils.

It means that the two games between Ferrybank and Southend United will be crucial to deciding which set will be playing first division football next season.
