Blues record an impressive derby victory
BY ADRIAN FLANAGAN
AN impressive opening night performance from Waterford United helped them to top place in the Airtricity League of Ireland First Division as the home side raced to an easy 3-0 victory against Wexford Youths in the South East derby at the RSC on Friday night last.
Waterford got off to the perfect start when they went in front after less than seven minutes when a super through ball from Timmy Purcell picked out Vinny Sullivan, who took the ball past keeper Packie Holden before slipping the ball to the back of the net from six yards.
Things got even worse for the visitors on 21 minutes when defender Warren Broaders was sent off by referee Graham Kelly for a two-footed lunge on Blues captain Kevin Murray.
Wexford midfielder Dean Broaders nearly put the ball in the back of his own net minutes later when great play between Willie John Kiely and Liam Kearney saw the latter put in a teasing left-wing cross but thankfully from Broaders point of view, his clearance went inches over the bar for a fruitless corner.
After Danny Furlong miskicked in front of goal for the visitors on 30 minutes when Gary Sheehan took advantage of a loose clearance from United goalkeeper Chris Konopka before Sullivan headed into the sidenetting nine minutes later after Seamus Long headed across goal after a Alan Carey corner.
BLUES IN CONTROL
The home side doubled their lead on 55 minutes when Paul McCarthy played the ball out wide to Willie John Kiely and after defender Aidan McCann slipped, the centre forward raced clear before drilling a right-footed shot under the body of Wexford netminder Packie Holden.
Kiely went close to adding a third goal for the Blues less than sixty seconds later when he raced onto a pass from McCarthy but his right-footed lob of the advancing Holden just went the wrong side of the target and shortly afterwards, Dean Broaders nearly put through his own net.
It got even better for the Blues on 71 minutes when David Grincell was tripped in the area by Wexford Youths; Aidan McCann leaving referee Kelly with no option but to point to the spot and it was Alan Carey that blasted an unstoppable spot kick past Packie Holden.
The vision from man of the match Liam Kearney saw him pick out Vinny Sullivan on 87 mins but his left-footed strike flashed inches wide with the Wexford Youths keeper beaten.
Gary Dunphy struck the crossbar with a super effort from 30-yards in the final minute when he took a pass from Gareth Cambridge as the Blues got their league campaign off to the perfect start. Next up for Waterford United is a trip to face Cork City Foras Co-op in the Munster derby at Turner’s Cross.
