Hendo delighted with opening night show
BY ADRIAN FLANAGAN

WATERFORD UNITED manager Stephen Henderson was delighted about his side played in their three nil victory over Wexford Youths in front of a crowd of over 700 at the RSC on Friday night last.

“We were all saying during the week that it was important to get a good start to the league and get your three points on the board so in that regard, it’s a great night,” said Stepehen Henderson after his side’s opening night victory at the RSC.

“I think it was also important to get three goals as well and although it could have been more, we’ll take three goals and three points, which was the most vital part of the evening.

“Obviously the player getting sent off for Wexford Youths made life more difficult for us but I felt we used the ball really well and I was delighted about how we played when they went down to ten men.

“I thought that Vinny Sullivan was tremendous for us tonight to be honest with you, with both Liam Kearney and Timmy Purcell down the sides and it was also encouraging to see both Seamus Long and Paul McCarthy working really hard in the centre of the park so overall, I’m pleased.

“The back four were very solid as well and with Chris Konopka keeping a cleansheet, it’s a good start to the season but we know that we’ll have to work even harder if we are going to achieve our aim, which is the league title.

“I know people were wondering before the start of the season where we are going to get the goals from but as you saw yourself tonight, Vinny and Willie John took their goals well and when other players like Kearney, McCarthy, Grincell and Purcell chip in with more, we’ll be grand in department.

“I think we’re blessed to have two excellent centre forwards in Willie and Vinny but also I was impressed with David Grincell when he came on tonight. We’ve worked very hard with him pre-season and he looked a serious threat when he came on so it’s good to see.

“But I thought that we didn’t have the ball tonight, the work-rate from the players was tremendous to say the very least so that’s a great start but I know we’ll get better again.

On the performance of Liam Kearney, Henderson said, “He is a little wizard. We thought it was a little narrow for him in the first half but he really came out in the second half and showed his true class. He was brilliant. We tried to get him on the ball and I think he showed a lot of people what he is capable of.

“Paul McCarthy is a top player and he was great tonight also. His workrate and effort was unbelievable. We’ve work on all this throughout pre-season and I also thought Seamus Long did really well as well so overall it’s a good start but we have to look forward now and the game in Cork next Friday night.

“We’ve got a completely different test against Cork. People are saying it’s going to be a great occasion but we’re not there to play an occasion, we’re there to play a soccer match and it’s really important that the players and our supporters understand that.

“Next Friday isn’t about Cork Foras or whatever they’re called, it’s about Waterford United trying to get three points, and we have to remain focused on that.

“I’m not into all this thrash that they’re team isn’t together that long because I know they’ve been training together or over a month but listen we’ll take that game when it comes around. I thought the crowd tonight was excellent and here’s hoping that it will be more of the same for the rest of the season,” concluded an upbeat Stephen Henderson.
