DLS produce masterclass to land the spoils
BY ADRIAN FLANAGAN
BOHEMIANS 2 DE LA SALLE 4 A fantastic second half performance helped De La Salle to pole position in the Property Partners U-14A league as they came from two goals down to outclass Bohemians at Ben Wadding Park on Saturday morning last.
After the home side had raced into an early two goal advantage, it looked as if the visitors would struggle to get back into the contest, however all that was to change once Dylan Foley pulled a goal back with a magnificent finish midway into the first period.
The question going into this game was whether or not Decky Long’s side could get over the disappointing performance that saw them lose to the same outfit in the SFAI cup and get themselves back into the title race and it was certainly answered come to the final whistle.
It was a super show against a Bohemians side that couldn’t get to grips with the middle of the park when it mattered most and after Jamie Walsh levelled the tie with a contender for goal of the season on 43 minutes, they looked the more likely to go on and win the match.
They left it late but there’s no doubting that they deserved all three points and this result means that De La Salle overtake Carrick United at the summit of the table by two points but have played a game more and if they continue to play like this, they’ll definitely be in with a shout of landing league honours.
The home side started very brightly and they could have went in front inside four minutes when a great sweeping move saw Jack Hale slip the ball into the path of Patrick Fitzgerald but the midfielder saw his left-footed strike saved by the legs of keeper Tom Farrell.
However, they did go in front less than two minutes later when Adam Caulfield had a cross handled in the area by Jack Maher and it was Hale that sent keeper Farrell the wrong way with the resulting spot kick and when it got better for Bohemians on 14 minutes, the visitors looked in serious trouble.
Caulfield was again in the thick of the action when he released Eoin Cleary with the perfect pass and after outpacing the visiting defence, he kept his composure to fire past a helpless De La Salle netminder from inside the penalty area.
After playing second fiddle for the majority of the early exchanges, the visitors did pull a goal back on 17 minutes when Jamie Walsh went racing down the left channel but when he lost the ball to Sean Kervick, his clearance fell to Dylan Foley and his stunning 30-yard strike went in off the underside of the crossbar.
This goal changed the course of the match as De La Salle took over and Andrew O’Connor struck the top of the crossbar on the stroke of half time before Jamie Walsh missed a sitter from a header and goal scorer Foley flashing a shot across the goal early in the second half.
However, they did level the tie on 43 minutes when Jamie Walsh latched onto a pass from Andrew O’Connor and after controlling the ball superbly with his head he unleashed an unstoppable shot from 16 yards high to the roof of the net giving keeper James Grogan no chance whatsoever.
With both sides looking happy with a point a piece as the game neared its conclusion, the visitors struck for the lead goal for the first time in the game two minutes before full time when man of the match Jamie Walsh broke the ball down to Ian Coady, who fired home first time inside a crowded area.
As Bohemians tried to force a late equaliser, De La Salle capped off a remarkable comeback in injury time when Ian Coady turned provider for Jack Maher, who headed past James Grogan to ensure an important league success as his side go top of the table.
