Waterford schoolboy’s Beckham connection
BY GER LAWTON
He might be one of the most well known sporting stars on the planet, but this week, the name of David Beckham, (or at least that on the back of his shirt) are proudly being displayed in Waterford.
Fionn Cox, a sixth class pupil of Waterford Educate Together National School was in Milan at a rugby tournament with Waterpark RFC, when he and his dad attended their first ever major football match.
Fionn and his dad made their way to the front of the 60,000 packed stadium and when the final whistle sounded, they commenced their chant for David Beckham, which caught Beckham’s eye. Beckham made his way over to an excited Fionn and increasingly panic stricken father.
As father and son fumbled in preparation to pass over a pen and programme for a signature, Beckham calmly strolled right over to them, removed his jersey, folded it neatly and with a knowing wink, lobbed it into Fionn’s hands.
‘It was unreal. I don’t know how or why he picked me out but he did. I could not believe it.’ commented Fionn.
The pen and programme made it over the divide between the pitch and stand, Beckham signed it, sent it back to the dazed father and son.
The semi naked Beckham, turned, and as calmly as he arrived, headed back across the pitch. Father and son left the San Siro, with Beckham’s jersey safely concealed from envious eyes.
